Pelicans are large water birds that are known for their long beak and large throat pouch. Pelicans will scoop up prey and drain the water out their pouch before swallowing.

Spawning[]

Pelicans spawn naturally in the overworld in groups of two to five. They can be found in a biomes near water, such as rivers, beaches or jungles.

Drops[]

When an adult pelican is killed, it drops:

  • 0-2 feathers.
  • 2-3 raw bird meat (2-3 cooked bird meat if killed while on fire).
  • 1-3 XP when killed by a player or tamed wolf.

If the pelican was tamed, it will drop any fish it was carrying too.

Behaviour[]

Pelicans are swimming birds and are able to swim on water. They do not take fall damage.

While in a loaded chunk, a pelican will lay a pelican egg every 5-10 minutes.

Taming[]

A pelican can be tamed by feeding it cooked salmon or cooked cod. Once tamed, a pelican will not eat any more cooked fish. The number of fish required is random – each one has a 1⁄3 chance of taming the pelican. When the pelican is tamed, hearts appear and it receives a red leg ring.

Tamed pelicans have an inventory which can be opened by crouching and right-clicking the pelican. Things cannot be placed in this inventory, but they can be taken out. Only the owner can access the pelican's inventory. If the owner right-clicks a tamed pelican, the pelican will sit or stand. If the pelican is sitting it won't follow its owner.

Every 5-10 minutes, a tamed pelican will scavenge for fish and add it to its inventory. The pelican will only fish if there is space left in its inventory. Pelican scavenging can be turned off in the mod config via allowPelicanScavenge.

A tamed pelican's leg ring can be changed by using a dye on the pelican.

Breeding[]

If two adult pelicans are fed raw salmon, raw cod or raw tropical fish, a baby pelican will spawn. The colour of the baby will depend on the parent; it has a 50% of being the same colour as its father, and a 50% chance of being the same as its mother. If both pelicans are tame, the baby will be tame too.

Baby pelicans can also be spawned by hatching a pelican egg. The colour of the baby will match its mother. An egg with a higher spawn rate will have a better chance of hatching successfully.
