Trees

All Current Vanilla Trees (note that oak in top right should be azalea)

In botany, a tree is a perennial plant with an elongated stem, or trunk, usually supporting branches and leaves. In some usages, the definition of a tree may be narrower, including only woody plants with secondary growth, plants that are usable as lumber or plants above a specified height. In wider definitions, the taller palms, tree ferns, bananas, and bamboos are also trees. Trees are not a taxonomic group but include a variety of plant species that have independently evolved a trunk and branches as a way to tower above other plants to compete for sunlight. The majority of tree species are angiosperms or hardwoods; of the rest, many are gymnosperms or softwoods. Trees tend to be long-lived, some reaching several thousand years old. Trees have been in existence for 370 million years. It is estimated that there are around three trillion mature trees in the world.

A tree typically has many secondary branches supported clear of the ground by the trunk. This trunk typically contains woody tissue for strength, and vascular tissue to carry materials from one part of the tree to another. For most trees it is surrounded by a layer of bark which serves as a protective barrier. Below the ground, the roots branch and spread out widely; they serve to anchor the tree and extract moisture and nutrients from the soil. Above ground, the branches divide into smaller branches and shoots. The shoots typically bear leaves, which capture light energy and convert it into sugars by photosynthesis, providing the food for the tree's growth and development.

Trees usually reproduce using seeds. Flowers and fruit may be present, but some trees, such as conifers, instead have pollen cones and seed cones. Palms, bananas, and bamboos also produce seeds, but tree ferns produce spores instead.

Trees play a significant role in reducing erosion and moderating the climate. They remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store large quantities of carbon in their tissues. Trees and forests provide a habitat for many species of animals and plants. Tropical rainforests are among the most biodiverse habitats in the world. Trees provide shade and shelter, timber for construction, fuel for cooking and heating, and fruit for food as well as having many other uses. In parts of the world, forests are shrinking as trees are cleared to increase the amount of land available for agriculture. Because of their longevity and usefulness, trees have always been revered, with sacred groves in various cultures, and they play a role in many of the world's mythologies.

Vanilla[]

Oak[]

An oak is the most common tree in the game, found in a variety of biomes, available in several variants. It has the smallest initial space requirement for growth, and along with dark oak trees, it has a chance to drop an apple when a leaf block is destroyed. As with birches, an oak tree grown near flowers can generate with a bee nest attached.

Birch[]

A birch is a tree that appears similar to a common oak in terms of height and leaves, but with light bark and pale wood. It is most commonly found in birch forest biomes. Tall birches are found only in old growth birch forest biomes and cannot be grown with saplings without the use of cheats. As with oaks, a birch tree near flowers can generate with a bee nest attached.

Spruce[]

A spruce and pine, grows from a spruce sapling and has growth patterns and requirements similar to birch trees, although they appear different. They are mainly found in the taiga biome, but they may also generate in windswept forest, snowy plains, snowy taiga, and old growth taiga biomes.

Acacia[]

The acacia tree is found in the savanna biome. Acacia trees are around 8 blocks tall and feature distinct diagonal trunks, and may occasionally have multiple canopies.

Jungle Tree[]

Jungle trees are features native to the jungle biome. Jungle trees range from short bushes to tall trees that reach up to 31 blocks in height. Their wood is of a pale brownish color.

Dark Oak[]

A dark oak tree is a variant of the oak tree with a thick trunk. They are found in the dark forest biome.

Mangrove[]

Mangrove trees are found in mangrove swamps, in which they can grow on water or land. They have large canopies and aerial root systems. Their wood color is vermillion. They can be planted in the air, but their roots always touch the ground.

Cherry[]

Cherry trees are found in cherry groves. Cherry blossoms have distinct pink leaves and curved branches. They also have a unique petal falling particle effect.

Palm[]

Palm is an upcoming tree that can be taken from Palm Trees. It is one of the rarer types of wood found in the Overworld, as it can only be found in islands in the middle of various ocean biomes, as well as in deserts.

Baobab[]

Baobab Trees are huge upcoming trees found in savannas. They are extremely thick (9 blocks or so), as well as tall. This makes them a very good source of wood, as you can harvest up to a large pouch full of wood (27x64 blocks) from a single tree.

Azalea[]

An azalea tree is a rare tree that can generate above a lush cave biome, marking the biome's presence aboveground. A variant of the usual oak tree, they extend their roots underground into the cave beneath.

Modded Trees[]

Many mods contain new types of trees, one of the most popular being Biomes o' Plenty. Here are examples of modded trees.

Non-Tree materials that produce wood/planks[]

Warped Fungus[]

A Warped fungus is a large "tree" like giant fungus, with a cyan/blue coloring, which generates in Warped Forest Biomes in the Nether.

Crimson Fungus[]

A Crimson fungus is a large "tree" like giant fungus, with a red/magenta coloring, which generates in Crimson Forest Biomes in the Nether.

Bamboo[]

Bamboo is a plant found in jungles, and can be used as fuel for smelting or cooking, to breed pandas, crafting scaffolding, sticks, and block of bamboo. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in Minecraft.
